How it works

Disk Space Map in three steps

  1. Choose what to map

Your home folder, this computer's drive, an external drive, or any folder.

  2. Let it walk the folders

It counts every file and folder; a large drive takes a minute or two.

  3. Explore and tidy

Click into the largest areas, show items in Finder or File Explorer, and move what you don't need to the Trash.

Good to know

What it can and can't do

  • Some folders are protected by the system and can't be opened without extra permission; they are listed so you know their space isn't counted.
  • Sizes are file sizes, which can differ a little from the space they take on the disk.
  • Links are not followed, so nothing is counted twice.

Questions

Questions about Disk Space Map

How do I see what is taking up space on my Mac?
Map your home folder or this Mac's drive. The largest rectangles are where the space goes; click into them to find the files.
Can I delete files from the map?
You can move them to the Trash, after a confirmation. Empty the Trash to free the space.
Why doesn't the total match my drive's used space?
Folders the system protects aren't counted, and the system itself keeps space for snapshots and caches that don't show as files.
Is it free?
Yes. Disk Space Map is free in AMWT Desktop.
